about

Civil Disobedience is an independent record label aimed at releasing techno music of a politically and socially charged nature. Taking its name from the British Suffrage movement, Civil Disobedience's mission is to honour and empower all gender identities who believe in absolute equality in music and beyond.

The label is founded by Annabel and Nicola under their Violent Blondes alias. Civil Disobedience demands creative freedom, expression and has attracted artists of the same ethos. With each release they want to promote a narrative, encouraging artists to use personal experiences to influence and lead their work.

The first release comes courtesy of Violent Blondes themselves. The inaugural EP is their comment about the dangers of mephedrone abuse. Its story, inspired by a local girl who became known as ’The Queen of Bethnal Green', serves as a social warning on the dangers of "the new generation of psychoactive drugs" in the affected area of East London. It is Violent Blondes' love for people, London and the idea that the future of raving can be better than its ever been, that drives the EP's message from its core.

‘The Queen Of Bethnal Green’ is a powerful introduction to the duo's take on techno, sampling the Queen's speech from the 2015 budget announcement they layer a pounding bassline with pitched top lines creating an uneasy juxtaposition.

A friend of the duo and respected techno artist in his own right, Jason Fernandes steps up for the remix. He bends the track into a darker and more relentless direction, saying, ‘some twisted snappy percussion, and some rolling lows, all that stuff plays with your mind a bit, but creates that energy too. I was literally on my feet zoning out to this one in a dark studio in the middle of the night.'
